Itinerant Librarian on Books

Like others, I am trying this out after GoodReads sold out to Amazon. I am an avid reader, and I hope to keep track of what I read as well as share it with others who may be interested.

 A little more about me:

I have been an academic librarian since 2004, and I started blogging in 2005. Prior to this, I have been a high school teacher and a college adjunct instructor. One of my passions is to teach others how to know when they need information, how to find it, and how to make use of it in an ethical way. I have access to a diverse range of information sources, and I know how to use them. Plus, I arm people with facts and information. I am firm believer in teaching these very important skills.

I call my professional blog A Simple Scholarly Librarian (where, among other things, I read a lot of library literature so you don't have to, then I write about it. This blog is currently on hiatus). I also keep my book review and personal blog at The Itinerant Librarian.  Finally, I do have a commonplace/scratch pad blog at Alchemical Thoughts. Feel free to check my blogs out. Comments are always welcome.

Married to The Better Half, we have a daughter who reminds me innocence and wonder are great things. We also have two cats who keep life interesting.

""We run willfully toward the flame. We live, submerged in apathy, and get angry when we find out that we have been sold down the river by the corporations who made us fat, stupid, and quick to lurch into unwinnable wars of choice. We also know that we watched it happen and did nothing. Neither the world nor life is fucked. You are" (108). "
Occupants - Henry Rollins

Henry Rollins telling it like it is in his most recent book, Occupants. There are so many great passages I could share (and I still might).

Celebrate the Power of the Fat Girl

Fat Girl: April Flores - Carlos Batts

Excerpt from my book review:

"The book is, at its core, a pictorial celebration of plus-sized model and adult film star April Flores (link to Wikipedia entry). I say celebration because the book is also a celebration of the beauty, power, and sensuality of the fat girl."

Want to make salsa at home? This book may help.

Salsas!: Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletin A-176 (Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin, a-176) - Glenn Andrews

Here is an excerpt from my review for this small but helpful book:

"I mostly checked this book out because I wanted to find some easy recipes to attempt making salsas at home. In that regard, the book does not disappoint. It does feature some pretty easy to make recipes."

Booknote: The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black

The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black - E.B. Hudspeth

Here is an excerpt of the review I wrote in my blog for this excellent book:

"To be honest, this is the kind of book I would have loved as a  young boy. I think "boys and girls and children of all ages" will enjoy the book. Hudspeth has created an excellent work of dark fantasy that evokes the best of Gothic horror."

Booknote: Legion

Legion - Dan Abnett

Excerpt from my review:

"Abnett overall is one of the better authors in the Black Library, and this book does not disappoint. It is different from other Space Marines books in Warhammer 40K in that it is not just war and battles. There is more intrigue and nuance here. These are marines versed in the arts of subterfuge and espionage."

Add Books Manually & Add Missing Book Covers

Reblogged from BookLikes:

New Books

Two "Add" functions are available on BookLikes from today:  add books manually and add book covers.

From now on it doesn’t matter if you want to shelve unpublished yet books or self-published or from a local bookstore, now you can put on your Shelf all books ever existed. It’s called manual book adding. We have it online!

If you don’t find a desirable book in a search box you can easily ‘create’ a book from the scratch.

Click on “Add new book” after no results were found and fill up the necessary information of Book Title, Book Author, Book Cover, Book Description and ISBN. Click “Add Book” and add it to you bookshelf or create a post.

Second “add” function is about missing book covers. If some books on your Shelf lack covers, you can add them manually too. Click on a green book (no cover) and ‘Add cover' underneath it. Then choose image from your computer and voila. The book looks perfect with cover of your choice!

So what book will you add first?

Finally, a feature I can use. One of the developing pet peeves has been incomplete or non-existent book data when I search for specific books. I am trying to avoid Amazon (which can be lacking) and the other search options pretty much suck to be honest. Now I can add the data in from the book that I have and a cover image as well. This is certainly a good start.

Now, BookLikes could connect to something like WorldCat, that would make this librarian very happy.

Summer Reading Flowchart
Summer Reading Flowchart

While this is mostly "classics" (even their "contemporary" stuff can still be considered "classics), I figured it was worth sharing. If you are looking for something classic to read over the summer, this may help you decide.

I have read a few items from the chart. I am sure you can probably find something to read to. If you do, feel free to comment and let me know. If you need help choosing, I can probably recommend something.

The chart comes from this link at teach.com.

Happy reading.

Booknote: Librarians as Community Partners: An Outreach Handbook

Librarians As Community Partners: An Outreach Handbook - Carol Smallwood

A brief excerpt from the review I wrote in my blog:

"I think this is a book that every outreach librarian, or any librarian planning to do outreach (or had outreach dumped on his/her lap) needs to have."

""The second is the fact that, however awkward it may be for the traditional press and nonpartisan analysts to acknowledge, one of the major two parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier--ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition. When one party moves this far from the center of American politics, it is extremely difficult to enact policies responsive to the country's most pressing challenges" (xiv). "

From the book It's Even Worse Than It Looks by Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein, which I just started reading today.

The quote goes to anyone who likes to say "oh, both parties are both the same." No. They are not. There is a clear difference, and in this instance, the Republicans have pretty much gone way out of the reservation as the saying goes. This book promises to look at the current dysfunction in American politics, how it got there, and offer some solutions. But like an alcoholic, the first step is admitting there is a problem, and in this instance, it is GOP.

Booknote: Generation Ink

Generation Ink: Williamsburg, Brooklyn - Nadine Rubin Nathan, Paul Nathan

Excerpt from review at my personal blog:

"I think anyone who has gotten a tattoo or two or a few will enjoy this book. For those of us not inked, if you enjoy good art and reading stories about people, then this is a book you may enjoy as well."

Booknote: Mail-order Homes

Mail-Order Homes: Sears Homes and Other Kit Houses - Rebecca L. Hunter

Review excerpt from my personal blog:

"This is a short book with a history of kit (or precut) houses that were popular from the very late 19th century to about the early 1980s (the last company that made these homes finally closed down the business in 1983 according to the book)."

Booknote: Serving Him

Serving Him: Sexy Stories of Submission - Rachel Kramer Bussel, Lori Selke, Teresa Noelle Roberts, Cole Riley, Joy, Ariel Graham, Emily Bingham, Kristina Wright, Jacqueline Applebee, Kissa Starling, Giselle Renarde, Jade Melisande, Vida Bailey, Kiki DeLovely, Gina Marie, Gray Miller, Mollena Williams, Maxine Mars

Excerpt of my review:

"The strength of this book lies in its diversity. The authors explore a broad spectrum of the erotic dance between the strong, seductive dominant male and the strong woman who thrives and blooms when she submits. The dance takes many forms in the twenty-two stories that the editor has carefully chosen for us."
